ETHEKWINI Municipality launched the 2017 ONE BOOK, ONE CITY campaign today at Ushaka Marine, the aim is to encourage the culture of reading among the communities.
The Head of Arts and Culture of eThekwini Municipality, Thembinkosi Ngcobo, said “the municipality encourages this campaign because social media is killing the culture of reading, currently people spend a lot of time in social media forgetting the importance of reading”.
The Municipality has committed to spend about R1.5million towards building a library in the city near Workshop Shopping Centre to benefit learners from around the city.Leaners and educators from Durban Girls, Wiggins and Mayville High School were also there to support the campaign.
The chosen book for 2017/2018 in libraries is “PAVEMENT OF THE BOOKWORM” written by the author Philani Dlala.In this book the young author talks about what influenced him to become addicted in drugs and how he left home at a young age and ended up in the streets of Johannesburg.
In the previous year’s these books topped the candidates, starting from 2013 “Long walk to freedom” was one of the chosen book, in 2014 “Native of Nowhere’’,in 2015 “Last Rhino” and in 2016 was “When the choke is down’’.
