The successful management of an organizations safety programme can be credited to a number of elements in the ENGIN’s fact sheet, “Engen generally conforms to the requirements in SANAS 10234 in respect of labelling of products. It is intended to provide workers and emergency personnel with procedures for handling or working with that substance in a safe manner, and includes information such as physical data (melting point, boiling point, flash point, etc.), toxicity, health effects, first aid, reactivity, storage, disposal, protective equipment, and spill handling procedures.”

In my observation and evaluation of this checklist against my personal experience during pressure fire and patient rescue scenario enactment North Complex Unit (SGP) in the tour around the refinery today at the company’s annual Engine refinery Emergency exercise, I witnessed the importance of communication, emergency procedure adherence and teamwork between personnel in the implementation of a safety programme.  The emergency rescue team, with care, precision and absolute patience tied securely the injured person from the top of the structure and slowly descended to the stretcher were they laid him safely and proceeded to the ambulance destined to St Augustine’s hospital.

Located in the South of Durban Kwazulu/Natal, the Engine Oil Refinery boasts of seven hundred and fifty (750) permanently employed and seven hundred (700) in contractual employment. The company operates with good working culture and regulatory consciousness. Speaking to Connect World Tabloid [CWT] at the media briefing on the company’s injuries on duty stats and involvement, James Nyawera HSEQ Safety Manager, said: “We have had nine (9) first aid injuries, two (2) medical treatment cases and no lost life injuries in the current year. Cases such as the one in the scenario have not occurred in the last three (3) years, the last time we had a similar situation was the year twenty eleven (2011).”  He further said, the nature of the oil business often demands specialized skills making it impossible to depend on filling those positions with professionals from around the area only. However, the company dedicates seventy percent (70%) of its contract workers portfolio often active during turn arounds to residents from the South.
