Student protest results in a clash with the law, seventeen arrests Durban, Westville August the 13th.

About 300 students gathered at the campus and started to protest for multiple grievances.

UKZN Student Representative Council president, Sandile Zondi said “multiple grievances led students to protesting: state of residences, NSFAS problems, lack of maintenance in university residences. Lack of WiFi, residences short of securities, high prices in cafeterias, fight against unfair academic exclusion and shuttle service timetables.”

Twelve of the seventeen arrested appeared in Pinetown Magistrate’s court on the 21 August Tuesday. A collaboration by SRC along with other students raised bail money for jailed students and they got released.

“Students were arrested for leading strike, public violence and property damage on campus.” said Mkhanyisi Mnyende, residence liaison officer.
